Hey! Welcome to our website.

Plot Twisters is an online community of researchers, designers, and technologists creating opportunities for self-reflection, especially for young people. We are growing a movement for self-motivated education and work, and empowering people to tell their own stories and advocate for their needs.

We see a huge problem: people of all ages lack freedom to engage with their personal narratives and social boundaries to make genuinely self-motivated decisions. Our systems fail to actively nurture our capacities for critical decision-making, self-reflection, and consent. This low regard for human agency starts at a young age in modern schooling and credentialization, then continues into labor institutions that reward select strengths. This problem perpetuates the systems of oppression in many humanitarian issues of today.

We want people to have agency over their own stories.

Plot Twisters is united by a core vision: a society where people have the freedom to tell their own stories, pursue their own curiosities, and make their own decisions. Our first step is to imagine tools that people could use to empower their senses of self. Over the last 18 months, we have been researching and developing tools for self-reflection, metacognition, personal narrative building, and the critical thinking and expression of emotions and needs.

We have skin in the game: we are imagining resources that we need for ourselves and our own communities. We believe change happens through one thousand small actions, and we're inspired by how, even through conflicts and misunderstandings, we've still been able to create deeply meaningful friendships and products with people so physically distant (many of us have never met in person!). We are gathering, organizing, and creating together to increase our collective imagination—the first step in visionary change.

We are in the research and development phase.

We're building up to the full launch of our digital self-reflection playground. Currently, most of our time is spent researching in our Think Tank and prototyping frameworks and experiences related to the following topics:

We're also creating role model reports, designing self-reflection activities, and mentoring students as they explore their strengths and values, in career and life.

Our community officially launched in January 2020 in North America. Today, our team is spread over three continents and six timezones.

The EMPOWER Lab at the University of Georgia researches interpersonal and racial trauma. The EMPOWER Lab supports our team understanding of trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy (TF-CBT) and racial socialization. We support the EMPOWER Lab by developing the website and illustrations for their online psychoeducation experience for young people healing from racial trauma.

Let's Talk LD

Let's Talk LD gathers and trains educators dedicated to neurodiversity. Young neurodiverse students often lack access to resources for personal and professional development. We seek advice from their leadership as we build our personal storytelling tools. Our goal is to build with the needs of students with learning, social communication, and attentional differences in mind.

Media Enterprise Design Lab (MEDlab)

MEDlab at the University of Colorado Boulder researches how media-driven organizations govern themselves. In partnership with King's College London, MEDlab has formed a cohort of technologists, researchers, and community organizers to "excavate" methods for governing online communities. As an online organization, we are collaborating with others in the cohort to further develop our framework for interdependent learning and work.
